We are thrilled to share some exciting news at Swimming Buddies - we have now been officially recognised as a Makaton Aware organisation. This is more than a badge, it’s a milestone in our ongoing commitment to making every swim session, every poolside chat, and every interaction as inclusive and welcoming as possible.

What Does “Makaton Aware” Mean?

Makaton Aware is an initiative that encourages organisations to break down communication barriers, ensuring that everyone feels valued, understood, and included.

Being Makaton Aware means that we:

  • Embrace understanding and patience in communication

  • Allow time and space for individuals to express themselves

  • Foster an inclusive environment where everyone’s voice matters

  • Provide staff support and resources to help with communication

  • Use clear signage (including symbols) to help navigate our space

  • Promote awareness and encourage further learning and training

At Swimming Buddies, our mission has always been to support neurodiverse children and families — to make the water a place of safety, confidence, joy, and connection.

Many of our “Buddies” and their families communicate in different ways. For some, spoken words may be difficult; for others, combining signs, symbols, and speech can make communication clearer and more comfortable. Makaton is a system that uses speech, signs, and symbols together to support communication.

By becoming Makaton Aware, we’re making sure that:

  • Poolside instructions remain accessible for all

  • Families and Buddies feel understood and welcomed

  • Communication barriers are lowered — not by asking people to change, but by adapting how we operate

Our vision is simple: to build a community where everyone's voice is heard and understood. Through Makaton Aware, we aim to promote inclusivity, empower individuals, and foster meaningful connections.
